Française des Jeux – Tour de France
The challenge
Française des Jeux, the operator of France’s national lottery games and the title sponsor of the FDJ cycling team, commissioned Poplar Studio to create a mini-game inspired by the Tour de France. By showcasing the experience at their annual ‘Inno Day’, they wanted to encourage the business to embark on more innovative ventures.
Our approach
We created a web-based augmented reality game which mirrors the Tour de France.
Upon launching the experience, a 3D avatar representing Arnaud Démare, a professional road racing cyclist, is virtually placed on a surface with AR. The avatar explains the rules of the game, including how to pedal the virtual bicycle and how to take a hydration break.
Once the cyclist avatar has explained the rules, a virtual 3D mountain appears on the table, with the selected 3D avatar at the foot of the mountain, behind the starting line. The user has to successfully pedal, using the game mechanics, to try to achieve the quickest time to the top, passing by landmarks that mirror those of the Tour de France route. Once they reach the finish line, the player is given their stats and put on a leaderboard, encouraging repeat play.
The outcome
The game was a big success among Française des Jeux employees, and the leaderboard resulted in quite the competitive spirit, especially as it was announced that the top 3 players would receive a prize!
